Neste Turnaround refinery

Neste is a producer of today's most advanced biofuel. Construction of the refinery on Rotterdam's Maasvlakte was completed at the end of 2011. Neste is an international company that focuses on low-emission, high-quality transport fuels. The Dutch refinery manufactures one product: NEXBTL. The production capacity of the refinery is 1,000,000 tons per year.

In early 2015, preparations began for the first turnaround of the refinery. The first turnaround is a challenging project as no history has been built up yet. The comprehensive turnaround knowledge within Neste was limited and a collaboration with an external project organization was desired.

Neste Netherlands commissioned BENK PROJECTS to perform the capacity management for the turnaround of the NEXBTL refinery at the Maasvlakte on behalf of Neste. This assignment included, based on capacity planning, filling positions during all phases of the turnaround, monitoring quality and integrating all specialists within the project.

In 2023/2024, the second major turnaround took place, in which BENK PROJECTS again had a significant share.

Personal reference

Willy Bubberman

project secretary at BENK PROJECTS

I joined BENK PROJECTS in 2015 as a project secretary and my first project was the turnaround for Neste. The project had been underway for a while at the time I joined because I was succeeding my predecessor who went on maternity leave.
I ended up working for this project at Neste for 2.5 years in the position of project secretary and then picked up document control. After the Turnaround was successfully completed, with the plant being serviced and preparations being made to connect a new plant, I was assigned to the new construction of the new biopropane plant.

My first contact was with Janneke And that is how I ended up at BENK PROJECTS. There has always been good contact with everyone at BENK PROJECTS and I still experience that. I work from a fixed contract and have meanwhile carried out several projects in chemistry and oil & gas.

Stephan van de Kamp

consultant at BENK PROJECTS

In 2015, we were exclusively asked by Neste to provide capacity for the entire turnaround. For me personally, this has been a very instructive period. A few months before this assignment was awarded, I started in the position of recruiter at BENK PROJECTS. This was my first experience within job placement and the oil & gas industry. Focusing entirely on the turnaround allowed me to quickly master the various disciplines. As a recruiter, I had to conduct several selection interviews for each of the 55 or so positions. This immediately gave me a large network of professionals with experience in turnarounds, often supplemented by maintenance and new construction experience, many of whom I still maintain close contact with. The turnover on this project was very low, which of course made me very happy as a recruiter. Partly because of this, I look back very positively on this challenging project.

Today, we still work closely with Neste where many beautiful challenging projects are planned in the coming years. Neste is an organization that always keeps innovating and does not shy away from any challenge. For me personally, these are the nicest and most challenging companies to work with.
